The European Union, through its actions in a wide
range of areas, has delivered nearly sixty years of peace, stability and
economic progress to EU citizens, thus contributing to the improvement of their
quality of life. ‘Quality of life’ is a broad, multidimensional concept, going
beyond traditional categories such as ‘economic production’ or ‘living
standards’. ‘Quality of life’ includes not only the material aspects of life,
but rather everything that one may value in living. Among the features that
shape quality of life are health, environmental conditions, economic security,
education, social connections, physical integrity, activities that people engage
in and their ability to participate as full citizens in the framing of
policies. A list of studies that were published by the European Parliament’s
Policy Departments, illustrating the EU’s capacity to contribute to the
improvement of the citizens’ quality of life, is available here.
